Stripped Gears and Drive Assembly Failures

Stripped “gear and sprocket” assemblies are common causes of motor humming. Inside most openers, a plastic drive gear meshes with a metal worm gear. Over time, an imbalanced door will grind the plastic teeth away. The motor spins and hums internally, but the smooth gears cannot move the drive chain.

You can diagnose this by looking for “plastic snow”—small white shavings inside the casing. If you see these shavings, the gears have failed. Technicians can replace these gear kits without replacing the entire motor head. However, you must still balance the door to prevent the new gears from stripping again.

Frozen Bearings and Motor Seizure

Internal motor bearings can seize up in unheated or humid garages. Dust, rust, and old grease create friction that prevents the shaft from turning. When you press the button, the magnetic field tries to turn the shaft against this resistance. This struggle produces heat and a loud humming noise.

Sometimes, the motor has reached the end of its lifespan and developed a short. If the hum is accompanied by a burning smell, disconnect the power immediately. A seized motor is a fire hazard because the internal windings may have melted. At this stage, the unit usually requires a complete motor replacement.
